The schooner Yacht America inaugurated and won the first America"s Cup-in l85l. Famous racing schooners included the fishermen Gertrude L Thebaud (legit Fishing craft) and the Canadian Bluenose- really a purpose- built racing yacht but it was used for fishing work and had boat and tackle racks, special fishing-type Kedge anchors, etc. The fastest Sailing ship to cross the Atlantic was the Schooner Yacht Atlantic built in l903 and famously raced in l905 crossing the Pond in l2 Days 4 Hours and l MIKnute and averaging over 200 miles per day, with higher peak day"s runs. The record stilil stands for conventional sailing craft. lastly the largest schooner of all was the seven masted Thomas W.Lawson. built in l902, 7 Masts, 375 feet, she was built originally as a collier but was converted to oddity of oddities a sailing ship oil tanker(whalers discounted here!) She was operated byt he Sun Oil Cojmpany (Sunoco) from l902-06 when she suffered a fatal accident. she had auxiliary engines not for propulsion but for POWER STEERING and as she was a tanker to work the pumps for cargo transfer, also had steam winches for rigging sail-often a fire hazard. so there are some famous American Schooner, well the Bluenose was Canadian.
