Kepler's "running mate" would have to be Tycho Brahe. It was Brahe whose work (observations) Kepler used as a springboard to think about the motions of the planets and what mechanism could make them appear to do the things they did.

A telescope is used to magnify things that are far away.That said, I'm not sure who told you that Johannes Kepler invented the telescope. He didn't invent the telescope itself, but he did come up with a new design. Kepler's design uses a convex lens at the eyepiece rather than a concave one. This has several advantages, but a couple of disadvantages, such as the image appearing upside down. This makes it largely useless for terrestrial work, but it's suitable for astronomy, which is what Kepler was interested in anyway.
Probably for much the same reason that Washington DC was named for the first president although he didn't build the city, Kennedy airport was named for John F. Kennedy although he didn't pave the runways there, and the Kepler Space Telescope was named for Johannes Kepler although he died 500 years before the launch. It's to honor the memory of these people whose work led to the existence of the things with which we memorialize them.

Then you need to explain why things move Because the planets move among the stars in a fairly strange way, that needs really complicated mathematics. It took over a thousand years before Johannes Kepler used math to discover the shape of the planets' orbits, and then Isaac Newton used more math to explain exactly why the orbits are that shape. Many more things, like the lives of stars, are explained by chemistry and physics, and they both use a lot of math as well.
