The biggest landmark on Alcatraz Island is the prison. While it is still not operating, some of the important parts of the building are still in place. Visitors can go into the prison and see the cells, along with the isolation room.
Alcatraz started out as a civil war fort and evolved into a CA high security prison. It is located on an island in San Francisco Bay which is very cold water and the tides are very dangerous so escape was impossible. Two men did escape and they never did find them. Authorities figure they died in the swim trying to read land. It made the perfect place to put very dangerous men.
Sorry, no(although that's a good thing). But there are many jails that it may be based off, such as Alcatraz, the island prison.
The cells in Alcatraz, specifically in the main prison building, measured approximately 5 feet by 9 feet. Each cell contained basic furnishings, including a bed, a toilet, and a washbasin, providing minimal comfort. The cramped quarters and stark conditions contributed to the infamous reputation of the prison as a place of isolation and hardship for its inmates.
it takes place in San Fransisco and on Alcatraz island which is in San Fransisco
The military used to use it as a place to store Civil war prisoners in 1861. Then in 1867 a jailhouse was built. In 1868, it was officially appointed a long-stay prison system.
Well, let's see... Alcatraz has not been a prison since the early Sixties, people come and go all the time. The Bermuda Triangle is a manufactured mystery; you are no more likely to vanish there than anywhere else, or you can bet Lloyd's of London would forbid traffic in it. So neither place is particularly inescapable.
Inmates at Alcatraz disliked the isolation and harsh conditions of the prison, which was situated on an island far from the mainland. The strict rules, lack of privacy, and limited opportunities for recreation contributed to a pervasive sense of hopelessness. Additionally, the cold and damp environment of the prison added to their discomfort, making it a place of both physical and psychological distress. The absence of meaningful rehabilitation programs further fueled their resentment toward the facility.
Interestinglly, it sounds like the food served on Alcatraz was quite good (compared to today's prison standard). There was meat and potatos, eggs and bacon, etc... Also, they got into some grim trouble because they gave the inmates real metal silverware in the beginning (oops).
a bed, a tiny window and a place where people pee :)
The U.S Army first used Alcatraz as a military fortress between the 1850s and the 1900s. In 1915, the Army then renamed the island to the Western U.S. Military Prison U.S. Disciplinary Barracks and was used as a holding place for mischievous enlisted personnel. In 1933, the Army left the island and left it in control of the Federal Government for the use of the new Penitentiary.
