The absolute minimum amount of care any fish needs is as follows. :- 1 inch of fish must have a minimum of 1 gallon of water. Every tank must have a permanently running 'cycled' filter. Every tank must have a minimum of 50% of its water replaced every week. Once these above necessesities are all provided then you will need to provide whatever special water parameters your chosen species of fish needs by way of Temperature, pH and General Hardness. The ease with which the correct water parameters are achieved depends upon the parameters of the reticulated water available from the tap and the ambient temperatures of your climate. A relatively easy species of fish to keep and breed that is an egg layer and is small and colourful, is the Flame Tetra (Hyphessobrycon flammeus). Temp around 78F. pH 6.8. GH 10 to 15ppm.
