they wanted equal rights and still trying to get them today
Jackie Robinson contributed to the Civil Rights Movement. He was the first black player on a professional team. He had to endure name calling, and people trying to prevent him from playing or traveling with the team. He did it with dignity and grace.
Almost everything that is acceptable today (political correctness) was definitely taboo in the 1960's which is partly the reason the 60's had so much turmoil...that "political correctness" was trying to "break out" into society in the 1960's, and was clashing with the traditional American way of life. Feminism (called the "Women's Lib Movement" during the 60's) & the Civil Rights movement (racial integration), along with the growing same gender rights movement were clashing directly with traditional America...a traditional America which called for war against communism and the resulting war in South Vietnam. The new movement people of Feminism, Civil Rights, etc. wanted NO PART of the "traditional American's" war. Sometimes referring to the Vietnam War as the "White Man's War" by some of the Civil Rights people. To simplify the answer: Almost anything that is acceptable today, was not acceptable during the 1960's. Almost anything that is NOT-acceptable today (smoking cigarettes for example) was totally acceptable in the 1960s. POLIiiTiiCAL diiSSENT
I believe there will be another movement in the future of America that will impact us with the magnitude of the Civil Rights Movement. The fact that politics have become so complicated is a major problem in society. Eventually the people in this country will become disgusted with the government trying to run every aspect of their lives. The Constitution was written to ensure equality and liberty in America. The founding fathers believed that every person has the right to life, liberty and property. Something will have to be done in order to return to simple, basic rights. It's only a matter of time before the people take this country back. Federalism, although it has helped in numerous instances, has also helped to bring middle class to near extinction. Middle working class is what built this country and I believe these are the people that will reclaim this country.
