Schedule A is Itemized Deductions. If you're able to itemize, you must file Form 1040 (U.S. Individual Income Tax Return), often called the 'long form'.

If you're taking the standard deduction, you probably can file either Form 1040 or Form 1040A (often called the 'short form'), depending on other income, adjustments, etc.

Should i use itemized deduction or standard deduction?

When it comes to reducing your tax burden, itemizing deductions may be the way to go. The standard deduction is certainly easier, and might be a better option if you have a simple tax situation or don't own a home. If you have numerous itemized deductions such as mortgage interest, charitable contributions, etc., it may make sense for you to itemize your deductions instead of using the standard deduction for your tax filing status. If you itemize and it totals over the standard deduction then itemizing is the way to go or the other way around if the standard deduction is larger.

Where do you put property taxes on the tax form if you do not itemize deductions?

Property taxes can be itemized on the schedule A itemized deduction of the 1040, or if your standard deduction would be more than your itemized deduction, the amount can be used to increase your standard deduction amount on your federal income tax return.

What is the opposite of itemize?

There is no opposite of itemize (list, detail) except the choice not to itemize. - On US income tax returns the opposite of listing itemized deductions is taking a standard deduction.) - The opposite of listing itemized expenses is to list a total or estimated total.

What is the purpose of IRS schedule A?

Schedule A of the 1040 individual tax return is where a taxpayer will list itemized expenses if they wish to itemize. The 1040 tax return allows taxpayers the option of taking a standard deduction or to use the amount listed on their Schedule A (Itemized Expenses). Less and less people use Schedule A as the standard deduction is increased every year. With low mortgage rates most people no longer have enough itemized expenses to exceed the standard deduction. Since you can use either the standard deduction or the itemized expenses, you want to take the one that allows you to reduce your taxable income the most. This has left more and more people better off to take the standard deduction.

If the truck weighs no more than 8500 pounds and it is purchased between 2/17/09 and 12/31/09, you may claim a deduction on your 2009 return when it is filed in early 2010 without itemizing. Otherwise, you would have to itemize and not claim the state income tax deduction.

What is the advantage of married filing jointly?

The advantage of married filing jointly is that your tax may be lower than your combined tax for other filing statuses. Another advantage would be your standard deduction, if you do not itemize, my be higher and you qualify for tax benefits that do not apply to married filing separate.

What is the difference in filing married single or married jointly?

Usually it is more beneficial to file as married filing joint than it is to file as married filing separate. To answer your question you will have to prepare a return both ways using the correct standard deduction for each filing status and if one itemizes the other should itemize also as the others standard deduction is -0-.
