Similar only in the fact that both can be used to record audio. However, their underlying technology is totally different. A cassette records audio in an analog format while a CD records audio in a digital format.
A VCD is a video CD-ROM. Same format as audio CDs except instead of encoding audio the disk holds encoded video and audio. The format is pretty much extinct now, but most PCs and DVD players will still play them if they are inserted.
