They vary depending on make and model. Some support the reading of many formats such as AVI, MPEG, Divi, DVD, VCD, MP3 and MOV.

Others are more fussy and only play DVD or CD. Check the specification before purchase. In my experience the cheap, unbranded ones, seem to be the most flexible.

If you mean what is the format on a DVD disk.

The files are arranged in large blocks of video with the extension *.VOB, VOB seems to be similar to an MPEG file.

Other files are there for menu systems and other features.

It depends upon you DVD player. If you have simple DVD player then it will play mpeg2 format which are in the .vob files and ac3 which is audio format.

other extensions it may support .avi .mp3 .mp4 .mkv etc

Almost any DVD player should be able to play a file if it is in MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 format. Newer DVD players can also play DivX and Xvid encoded videos.

DVD players basically accept the DVD-Video format. Modern DVD players can also play formats like mp4, mkv, mp3 DVD, HD DVD and Blu Ray.

AVI MPEG but you can record any format if you use DVD-X-player.it convert recorded video files to ASF, AVI, iPod-MP4, PSP-MP4, MPEG .
