Lakes are usually formed by rain water or water from a stream or group of streams collecting in a basin, valley, or other low area. These low areas can form in a variety of ways such asmountains uplifting around the area or glaciers carving out rock and soil. In some cases lakes can fill volcanic craters. Some lakes are man made, resulting from a river being backed up behind a dam.
