The three prophecies of the three witches predict Macbeth's rise from thane of Glamis, to thane of Cawdor, to King of Scotland. The three apparitions that the three witches conjure then predict MacBeth's downfall. First, an armed head warns MacBeth to dismiss MacDuff, thane of Fife. Second, a bloody child assures MacBeth that no man born of woman will harm him. But MacDuff was born by Caesarian section. And, third, a child with a crown on his head and a tree branch in his hand promises that MacBeth will only be defeated when Great Birnam Wood moves to Dunsinane Hill. But MacDuff has only to cut branches off the trees for his men to wear, and thereby move the wood in that manner up the hill.

The Three Witches in Macbeth represent darkness, chaos, and conflict. Though the witches do not deliberately tell Macbeth to kill King Duncan, they use a subtle form of temptation when they inform Macbeth that he is destined to be king.

The witches don't make Macbeth perform any dark acts, such as killing King Duncan; they just put the idea in his head. The witches tell Macbeth he is the Thane of Cawdor (which he doesn't know yet) and also tell him that he will be king. Once Macbeth finds out he is in fact the Thane of Cawdor, he begins to believe the witches' prophecies. Lady Macbeth convinces him that the only way Macbeth can be king is by killing King Duncan, and he does so. The witches' role in making Macbeth a tragic hero is to serve a catalyst for Macbeth's dark thoughts.
The three witches in Macbeth tell Macbeth and banquo that Macbeth will be king of the land. Banquo asks what is in store for him , and the witches reply , that his sons will inherit the throne. In later story Macbeth Kills banquo so it is his sons that are heir to the throne.
It is important that witches reappear in Act 4 of MacBeth because they tell him of his future. This helps to shapes many of the events later in the story.
