Many states encourage participants to purchase seeds and plants from retailers who participate with the state's food stamp program. Obviously, it is limited to common edible varities of plants. Check with your local authorities on availability of purchases. Many representatives may not know for certain.

States that encourage its participants to buy plants to grow their own food specify those most suitable to your local climate and those generally classified as common foods in your environment and culture. The recommended varieties for your growing climate can be obtained from your local University or state Ag department.

It is not harmful to attempt to buy something to determine whether it is covered on your food stamps. Please be considerate to consumers and the retailer by ensuring you handle the plant(s) carefully when bringing it to the check-out station. If the sale does not proceed, offer to put the selections back in the garden department.

Carelessnes and irresponsibility often encourage tax-paying voters to cease funding of food stamps. Be considerate.
