This depends on if you are asking about the time travel equipment or the what the car uses to achieve forward motion...
the time travel system is electrical however it in the movie it needs a plutonium chain reaction to generate the incredible amount of electricity to make the time jump...according to the movie 1.21 Gigawatt's (basically 1219 Megawatts or 1.21 Billion watts)....an average modern nuclear power plant produces around 200 to 300 Gigawatt's....
however the delorean uses its factory installed internal combustion engine...and runs on ordinary gasoline to get the car up to 88 MPH and at this speed with the time travel equipment on time travel is achieved....however in Back to the future part 2 after being modifide in the future buy doc brown with the ability to fly the delorean some travels back in time when its struck by lightning even when it is was not moving forward...
also the origonal plutonium reaction chamber has been also been replaced by a mister fusion micro fusion reactor that takes ordinary garbage and some how makes it under go nuclear fusion to create the electrical energy needed to travel in time...
this was also done when doc traveled to the futue at the end of the first movie
hope this answers that question properly and intelegently..

yes, the military does it all the time when aircraft have to travel farther then the max fuel quantity allows
Because Marty went back in time and changed history a bit altering Dr browns creation of the time travel car
