Use a similar tool made of flexible nylon. Most auto parts stores will sell this tool at very little cost. Do not be afraid to bend the tool during insertion.

I just changed it on my '99. There is a special fuel line disconnect tool that fits under the disconnect and spreads the 4 prongs that hold the line on. I didn't have the right one so I went to AutoZone and bought one for $10 and took a grinder to it to make it short enough to fit between the filter and the connector. THEN it was a 5 minute job! You can buy a fuel disconnect tool at any auto parts store. The one I bought was only $4.00. It slips on the filter and slides in the plastic clip to disengage the filter. Be careful after you disengage because the filter will have more fuel stored in it.
