Use a similar tool made of flexible nylon. Most auto parts stores will sell this tool at very little cost. Do not be afraid to bend the tool during insertion.

It does no harm to disconnect the battery when working on a vehicle but in general no, you do not need to disconnect them to change a filter.

I didn't have the right one so I went to AutoZone and bought one for $10 and took a grinder to it to make it short enough to fit between the filter and the connector. THEN it was a 5 minute job!
