Women through history generally got less formal education than men. The first female university graduates date from the late 19th century. Before that, there were (usually upper-class) fathers who allowed their daughters to participate in the home schooling that their brothers got and who encouraged them to read, learn languages etcetera. 16th Century Queen Elisabeth I for one, had had an excellent education and was fluent in five languages, Latin amongst them.
In the 'lower' classes formally well-educated women were very rare, but so were many of the men. But when for instance a couple ran a business it was far from uncommon that the woman was the best bookkeeper and acted as equal partner in all business decisions.
But until the 19th century, almost all educated women were home schooled.
Emma Willarad opened a high school in New York for girls and this was the start to a real education for woman.
