Most firefighting foams use regular air. Before air is introduced, the liquid foam product is proportioned into water either ahead of time or as it flows through the fire house.
Air is mixed with the foam/water solution either at the nozzle or by using an air compressor (Compressed-Air Foam System(CAFS))

∙ 11y agoThe "gas" used with most foam applications is actually regular air. Firefighters use a concentrated foam liquid that is specifically designed to fight certain types of fires. (For instance, class A foam would be used for "ordinary combustibles" such as paper, wood, cloth, etc.)
The concentrate is mixed with water through a device called an eductor. The fire nozzle then introduces air into the mixture which causes bubbles to form.

∙ 14y agoStandard firefighting foam just uses air. When the foam/water mix exits the nozzle, air is drawn into the mix causing the foam to bubble up
