That could be hard to find the answer to. What I would do, is wait until your gas light comes on, fill a gas canister with a gallon of fuel, keep sealed in your trunk. Stay near gas stations, bus drive around until you run out of gas, than put the one gallon of gas in your tank, and drive to a gas station A.S.A.P. Then you will always know.
You can put energy where it can be recovered. Charge a battery. Fill a hot-water bottle. Fill a gas canister with compressed gas, or a combustible gas. Climb a high building, or a children's slide.
Usually, the soldiers wore a bread bag, which they put food and bread in, a canteen, a gas mask canister which was used to put the gas mask in, sometimes a mess tin so they had something to put their food on, and also sometimes a baynet and a foldable shovel. Some may have also had a set of ammo pouches. But most soldiers only had the breadbag, ammo pouches, gas mask canister, and canteen.

No you can not use a bbq coal cuz there are chemicals in it that make it toxic to inhale directly.
Light a wooden splint and dip it in the gas. If it is Carbon Dioxide, it will put the fire on the end out.
