Methane was discovered in 1776 by Italian physicist Alessandro Volta when he collected the gas produced by decaying organic matter in a marsh. He then named the gas "marsh gas" or "flammable air" before it was later identified as methane.
They were first discovered in 1776 by the German naturalist Johann Christian Daniel von Schreber.
The first gas to be discovered was hydrogen. It was discovered by chemist Henry Cavendish in 1766.
In 1776, a British scientist, Henry Cavendish recognized hydrogen as a definite element and he named it as inflammable gas as it burns. The name hydrogen to it was given by a French scientist Lavoisier in 1783.
There were 6 known planets, Uranus and Neptune weren't discovered yet.

According to historical records a man by name Henry Cavendish first discovered the element in 1776. He found that various elements including Hydrogen composed water. he also discovered gas from a metal acid experiment. In 1783, Antoine Lavoisier named the gas hydrogen when he and Pierre-Simon Laplace proved the findings of Cavendish that water could be produced when gas is burned. In 1898, the element was first liquified by James Dewar. he did this mainly with the help of vacumm flask and the regenrative cooling technique he invented. In 1899, he invented solid hydrogen. Argon was discovered in 1894 by the scientist Lord Rayleigh and his colleague Sir William Ramsay. It was the first noble gas to be discovered.
