There's probably not that much gas at all on Pluto. What is there is probably in the atmosphere. Pluto is a very small planet so it can not have a very thick atmosphere. It is also a very cold and icy (dwarf-)planet so much of the material is likelier to be frozen solid that be gaseous in the atmosphere. The very thin atmosphere that actually is there is made up mostly of nitrogen. Also, methane and carbonmonoxide has been detected in solid form on the surface and is believed to sublimate (go directly from solid to gas) into the atmosphere.
