The question isn't very clear, so if I'm not answering it correctly you might want to be more specific in your questioning. Make sure the lamp is not plugged into an electrical source before starting the directions below: It sounds like you have a lamp, maybe it has an existing socket or not? But the socket (where you screw the bulb into) is the part of the lamp that will determine if it is going to be three way or not. If you have an existing socket, remove it by loosening the set screw at the bottom, the it will probably be screwed to a shaft, so rotate the socket counter-clock-wise, as the base is separated from the socket, you can remove the wires from the socket by either cutting them or removing the bottom portion of the socket to gain access to the screws where the wire is fastened. Then simple attach the wires to the 3-way socket and reverse the steps above.
