The gear oil best suited for a 1991 4x4 is 75w-40. The best idea, however, is to check the owner's manual which will provide recommended products for the vehicle.

Gear oil...usually 75w90 weight. I would use Royal Purple or any synthetic gear oil. That goes for both differentials and the transfer case.
Your transfer case may be in neutrual.
Usually you fill it to the bottom of the hole.
It goes from you speedometer down you engine bay to the transfer case (if that's a 4X4) or into your transmission (4X2)
