A Civil War battle was fought at Yellow Tavern in Virginia on May 11, 1864. Yellow Tavern was an inn approximately 6 miles north of Richmond, Virginia. The Union forces were led by Major General Philip Sheridan. The Union forces had superior firepower and outnumbered the Confederate forces. The Union forces defeated the Confederated forces which were led by Major General J.E.B. Stuart. Stuart died the next day from a wound he received during the battle.
