Stars give out light energy, that is they are luminous. Thus we see them for the same reason we see a lighted torch bulb.
Firstly, planets are way way smaller than the stars! That's because you can see stars in the night but never planets. Also stars produce nuclear energy in their core so they give thermal ( heat ) energy. Also stars have more gravity than planets.
The gravitational pressure and heat created by gravity causes nuclear fusion to occur in the core of the star. This energy flows through the star to its exterior, where it is radiated into space.

The fact that you can see stars that are many light years outside our solar system and even in other galaxies is proof that some of the energy from those stars is reaching your eyes. Therefore, it is logical to assume that the energy from our star, the sun, likewise reaches far outside our galaxy. However, by the time solar energy travels that far, it is far too insignificant to have any effect.
