Melanin
The amount of melanin you have in your skin is determined by your genes- it is a genetic trait you were born with inherited from your mom and dad.
The sun makes skin get darker.
In addition-
The sun's UV rays are absorbed by melanin in varying concentrations resulting in different skin colors/freckles/tans etc....
The lighter a person's natural skin color, the less melanin the skin has to absorb UV and protect itself. The darker a person's natural skin color, the more melanin the skin has to protect itself.

∙ 8y agoMelanin is the pigment inside skin cells.
melanocytes produce melanin of which there are two types; pheomelanin (red) and eumelanin (very dark brown). it can get very complex, but those are the basics
Lizzy the guru - the above is correct, but to add a little more, these melanocyte cells have prominent characteristics or traits (known as phenotypes).
We understand these traits ensure their responsibility for our skin and hair's pigmentation allowing enough melanin production to provide protection from damage by ultraviolet radiation (sunlight).
As we continue to study the role of melanin and pigmentation, it is hoped that skin Biology will lead us to understand skin diseases, particularly skin cancer.
