As a researcher who has spent most of his professional life studying the tapir, I find it saddening that the contribution of the Asian tapir is so under-appreciated even in this age of environmental awareness. It is a little known fact that the Asian tapir provides excellent and nourishing meat, and its hide can be crafted into attractive leather products. There is almost no part of the Asian tapir that can not be put to good use if a little imagination is employed. One of my most treasured possessions is a decorative ashtray made from a tapir skull.
