It was a United Nations-led mission in Somalia known as UNSOM II - United Nations Operation in Somalia II.
The group formed in 1944 at the Dumbarton Oaks estate in Washington, D.C., was known as the United Nations Conference on International Organization. This gathering brought together representatives from 39 nations to discuss and draft the foundation for what would become the United Nations. The discussions focused on issues of international cooperation, peace, and security in the aftermath of World War II.
After the Second World War it was clear that the League of Nations (group set up to deal with global humanitarian issues) wasn't working, so in 1945 50 countries signed a charter that set out the aims of what was known as the United Nations Organisation, eventually coming into being on 24th October 1945 (hence why we celebrate United Nations Day on the 24th of October)
Today, UNICEF stands for the "United Nations Children's Fund". It was originally known as the United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund. Its name was shortened in 1953 when UNICEF became a permanent part of the United Nations system.
