The Mormons, followers of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, traveled west to Utah in the mid-19th century to escape religious persecution and establish a new homeland. Led by Brigham Young, they sought a place where they could freely practice their beliefs and build a close-knit community.
The answer to this question is that it isn't important what religion they were. Many people sought to come to the west in the 1800's. They faced overpowering odds and hardships. Some were Christian and some weren't. Morman's are an example of people seeking opportunities and religious freedom in the western movement.
