Joseph was taken out of the pit by Midianite traders, who were on their way to Egypt. His brothers had initially thrown him into the pit out of jealousy but later sold him to these traders for twenty shekels of silver. The traders then took Joseph to Egypt, where he eventually became a prominent figure.
The children of Israel took the bones of Joseph with them when they left Egypt. Joseph had requested his descendants to carry his bones out of Egypt and bury them in the promised land.
Joseph went to Egypt as a slave. Jacob's other sons came to Egypt because of famine in their homeland. In Egypt they were assured of land and food by Joseph who was now second in charge of the land.
