the Weavers
The weavers
Several groups were significantly affected by American anticommunism, particularly during the McCarthy era in the 1950s. The Communist Party USA faced intense scrutiny and many of its members were blacklisted, leading to a decline in its influence and activities. Additionally, labor unions with perceived leftist affiliations, such as the United Electrical Workers, were pressured to purge their ranks of communists or risk disbandment. Cultural organizations, including various civil rights and peace groups, also faced significant challenges, resulting in decreased membership and operational capacity due to fear of association with communism.
The US group known as the Weavers (notably Pete Seeger and Lee Hays) disbanded from 1953-1955 after members were questioned during McCarthyism and Seeger was convicted for contempt of Congress.
