The Crusades were fought between Christians and Muslims. They fought in the Middle Ages, and actually fought violently. Both sides wanted to take control of Jerusalem.
They fought because the Muslims had control of Jerusalem, the most important city to the Holy Roman Empire. To get Jerusalem back under the control of it, the crusaders started the Crusades, or holy wars.

The Crusades were a series of holy wars fought between Christians and Muslims for control of Jerusalem and the Holy Land during the Middle Ages. The First Crusade was launched in 1096 and resulted in the capture of Jerusalem by Christian forces in 1099. Subsequent Crusades followed over the span of two centuries.
The Crusades were fought over the control of Jerusalem, which was considered a holy site for Christians, Muslims, and Jews. The city changed hands multiple times between Christian and Muslim forces during the Crusades.
No war has been fought for control of the Western Wall, per se, but dozens of wars have been fought over control of the Old City of Jerusalem in order to control the holy sites of the city. The last such war was in 1967, the Six-Day War.
The main purpose of the Crusades were to capture the holy city of Jerusalem, and the conquest of Muslim "heathen" lands.
