Actually, you can play both bass and guitar on any amplifier. But to produce a better and lower sound for bass, you need a special amplifier for it. I am not sure that there is an amplifier that can play bass and guitar with equal quality.
Wear and tear through general use. Aside from any physical knocks they might recieve, they are passing through large amounts of current and causing vibrations. The heat and loud sounds they produce will eventually cause amps to deteriorate.
