The war had all ready begun when the Declaration was signed. On April 18, 1775 the Battle of Concord had taken place, the Battle of Bunker Hill, and June 15, 1775 Washington was made commander of the army and the Declaration was signed July 4, 1776 so it just changed the way that the war was presented. Countries that might not have intervened in an internal struggle felt less constrained to aid the Americans. Most had ongoing disputes with Britain already.

The signers of the Declaration gambled fortunes and lives by signing it. The 56 men who signed pledged lives, fortunes, and honor that day. Their average age was 44 years old and were well off. Most had money, and power in their communities. None were hungry or jobless. Of the men 24 were lawyers, 14 farmers, 4 doctors, nine merchants, and one minister. Some lost their lives during the war, others lost family members, and many lost property.
