If removed with power off your PC won't boot, beeping a code for missing/corrputed RAM. Depending on the BIOS you may or may not get a message saying so.
If removed with power on the RAM there are a few things that can happen
- the motherboard and ram may get damaged
- the BIOS may cut power in attempt to prevent component damage
- magic smoke may begin to come out from the chipset (extremely unlikely in modern designs)
- if power isn't cut by BIOS, OS will freeze or bluescreen.
