Spain did not allow English trade with Spanisch colonies in America, but English pirates and adventures often attacked Spanish ships, taking their gold and silver. Philip of Spain knew that Elizabeth encouraged this and received her share of the profits. Inevitably, Philip decided that he had to conquer England. He sent the Armada the largest fleet ever to go to sea, to attack England (1588). But he did not succeed, the Armada was defeated.
