Depending on who the child is caught by directly results in the issued punishment. If he or she was caught stealing by the clerk or menial task worker, chances are she would just be told to put it back and maybe leave. Contrary, if the child theive were to be caught by perhaps a manager or someone in a similar or higher authoritative stance, the child could face punishments such as writing a letter of apology, getting parents involved in multiple ways, or ultimately ban the thief from said establishment forever.
