well the short answer is:
when a user enters a URL, your browser connects to your internet connection and then asks the connections DNS (domain name server) and basicly searches for the address of the requested page. Once it finds it the DNS server forwards it back to the users browser and the browser connects you to the site. tempororaly storing image files and displaying text.
It takes you to another website or page in the same website where the link is given.
