He does become a Shinigami, as seen in Death Note Directors Cut and also at the end of the anime, since the Shinigami threw old Ryuk and apple and was wearing the same jacket Light was when he died.
Ryuk said in Death Note that any human using the Death Note cannot go to Heaven nor Hell. The human is sent to Mu instead. Mu is Japanese for Nothingness. In the epilogue, we see a new shinigami in the Shinigami Realm. There are several reasons to believe that is Light Yagami as a shinigami (thus making Mu the Shinigami Realm) but there is no firm proof.
How should he become a Shinigami? He's a human. It is stated in Death Note that no human, with no exceptions, go to Heaven or Hell. They go to "MU" AKA Nothingness.
In fact, yes! Remember when Rem (Er... Basically Light) killed L, right? Remember how Light sort of loomed over L like that? That is what exactly L did to Light when Light dies. But, one of the rules in the Death Note is that the person who uses the Death Note cannot go to Heaven nor Hell. So, many of the fans think that at the very, very last episode/epilogue of the show, they show Ryuk telling this other shinigami a story of Yagami Light. That shinigami, as many fans suggest, is Light himself, remaining in Purgatory forever as a shinigami, because of the red tie tied around his head (like the one Light has), and the jacket he wore was similar to the one Light also wore. At the very end, when the mysterious shinigami leaves Ryuk to go to the human world, Ryuk says, "Light".
He could become too weak to defend his realm.
- heaven - hell - reincarnation - decay - become ghost =-= FAMILY FEUD=-=

You simply send to shinigami realm. You can't go to heaven nor hell.
No. They can go to neither heaven nor hell. They go to the shinigami realm.-
The Soul Society is kind of like a sort of heaven. Shinigami lead lost souls to that place to live a life of peace.

Bleach is an anime about a boy named Ichigo Kurasaki, who becomes a shinigami, or a death god. Their job is to protect souls from hollows, and send them to soul society, which is basically heaven. Hollows eat souls, and they gain rank from eating other souls, untim they become a grande, or something like that, and somewhere along the way can overcome their masks and become arrancar, who have a human form, but a hole somewhere in their body. Ichigo meets a shinigami named Rukia, and to save them both from a hollow, he has to stick her sword through himself to become a shinigami. He later meets friends Chad and Inoue, who he gives powers to, having no idea he had that ability. With a few more friends, they go on a quest to defeat Aizen, a man who wants to destroy the soul king and to do that, must destroy the town where Ichigo and his friends live.
In the events of a human obtaining the death note, It would be entirely theoretical if killing someone accidentally would save you from the deal of the shinigami which is '' a human who uses the death note can neither go to heaven nor hell'' Once you have obtained the death note, the rules behind the notebook is clear. Trying the effectivity of the notebook is basic human nature, its called CURIOSITY. Even a genius like Light Yagami could'nt help his curiosity. If you're concerned that a genius detective would be hot on your trail, don't worry. The only flaw Light had is that he was the son of japan's chief of police, the son of the great Chief Soichiro Yagami. If Light was'nt the son of the chief of police he would'nt have been servalanced along with the other families of the task force members assigned to L on the Kira investigation. So final conclusion, If you killed someone accidentally with the death note you still can't go to heaven nor hell, even forfeiting ownership of it. Say hello to Riyuk for me. - Thomas W
It is written as one of the conditions in the Death Note. Ryuk also mentions this before Light Yagami dies at the end of the book. As to where these people go, they end up in Mu, meaning nothingness.
You should not become pagan if you want to go to heaven for eternity.
Love your enemies , and pray for those who persecute you so that you may become the sons of your Father in heaven ( mathew 5 :44 )
