Shites were created because after Prophet Muhammad;s death, (pbuh), there were 4 successors that of him. One successor in particular name was Ali. It is because he was the last leader after Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) They believe that he shoud be seen as the completer of Islam. In sraahs and verses from the holy Qur'an, when there is Muhammad's name, they replace it with Ali.
