A close read of both Luke 2 and Matthew 2 will reveal two differing stories due to the timeframe. Luke speaks of the infant Jesus just born (5- 4 BC) and the visit by the Shepherds. He continues with the circumcision (8 days old), Temple offer (40 days after birth), trip to Nazareth (probable toddler), and Jesus at 12 years old.
On the other hand, Matthew 2 starts with Wise Men (Magi) coming from the East (Parthian Empire) and visiting Jesus now a Child, in a house. This would make it 6 mos. to 2 years after Luke's account. Matthew then speaks of their fleeing to Egypt until Herod dies in late 4 BC and the family returning to Nazareth to fulfill the prophecy.
Two different accounts due to the age of Jesus and the parties visiting.
