The surprise-attack by the Japanese upon Pearl Harbor (Hawaii) on December 7, 1941, had several important consequences. For one thing, it brought America into World War II. For another thing, it severely reduced American naval strength, giving the Japanese a decisive military edge as the war began. For yet another, it infused into America a commitment to wage war until victory was achieved, as the attack was seen by most as underhanded and otherwise unfair.
