After the conquest of Fort Henry on Feb. 6, 1862, Grant invested Fort Donelson with 25,000 men and the support of Commodore Foote's gunboats flotilla, on Feb. 12.

On Feb. 14 the defenders repulsed an attack of the gunboats, which withdrew.

On Feb. 15 the Confederate garrison attempted to force an escape route southward.

They struck the right of Grant Army but were unable to exploit their success and retreated back to their initial positions, pursued by the Federals who strengthened the siege.

The situation of the defenders had now become desperate and on Feb. 16 the Confederates surrendered unconditionally to Grant.

The fall of Fort Henry and Fort Donelson opened the way for the Union Armies to move up the Tennessee deep into Confederate territory.
