A landslide on one side of the volcano released pressure on water saturated lava, causing a steam explosion followed by a full explosive type eruption. This generated millions of tons of fine ash the fell as far as a thousand miles away or more and a blast wave that leveled trees for tens of miles around the volcano. Ash that fell in the nearby river caused severe damage by virtually turning the river briefly into "liquid concrete".
