It was the first test of the new Union General Joseph Hooker against Lee and Stonewall.
Lee managed to wrong-foot Hooker by refusing to fight on the field that Hooker had chosen. This caused Hooker to lose his nerve, and he became indecisive. Stonewall then led a massive charge at off-guard Union troops who were resting easy. The battle was a brilliant Confederate victory, but Stonewall was mortally wounded in a friendly-fire incident.
Neither Lee nor his army was ever the same again.
