The city of Ai was the next city Israel attacked after Jericho. If you recall, there was an Israelite man (Achan) who disobeyed God by taking some of the gold from the raid of Jericho, and keeping it for himself. Because of this, the Israelites lost in a terrible battle of Ai. This battle brought the first Israelite deaths of the 'war', so to speak. After God showed Joshua who committed the sin and the man, his family, and belongings were stoned to death, the Israelites attacked Ai again. This time they won with no deaths.

However, archaeologists say that Ai had been destroyed many centuries before any possible invasion, and all that could have been there were some ruins of the ancient city. The Hebrew name, Ai, actually means 'Ruins' in Hebrew, evidence that the Israelites never even knew the real name of the city or who its inhabitants were. Historians say there was no conquest.
This was a glorious legend of military genius that the Israelites must have been proud of, but it was no more than a legend, created long after the people had forgotten how they really came to occupy the Canaanite hinterland. ∙ 9y agoThe Israelites were at first defeated and later were able to take the city. The early defeat was because they had lost favor in God's eyes due to a sin explained in Joshua ch.7.
