South Karea wanted to remain independent, while North Korea, the soviets, and the Chinese wanted to spread communism. South Korea had no chance in stopping the soviets advancement. the soviets had taken control of the country nad had left onle a small peice of the peninsula, Pusan. South Korea asked the United Nations to get involved, and that's when they get aid to resist communism.

AnotherOn June 25, 1950 at or about 0400 hours (4:00 am) the Communist North Koreans began and artillery and mortar barrage across the 38th parallel. This barrage was used to reduce resistance toan armor supported infantry attack across into South Korea. This aggression caused the United Nations Security Council to pass a resolution calling for a cessation of hostilities and a return to status quo ante (the withdrawal of invading forces).

On June 26th Uijongbu fell to the communists.

On June 27, 1950 US forces have their first victory in the war when a USAF F-82 shot down a Democratic People's Republic of Korea (North Korean) Yak fighter.

On June 28th, South Korean forces destroy the Han River bridge, trapping 3 ROK (Republic of Korea) divisions north of the river but cutting off the main crossing of the river. North Korean Army units enter Seoul and take it by the end of the day.

On June 29th the first US ground troops (507th AA Bn) arrive at Suwon and engage 4 North Korean aircraft.

That is a brief rundown of the first 5 days of the war.

Korea had long been a colony of Japan prior to WWII. Following the American conquest of Japan in 1945, the Korean colony was given its independence. The Russians had come into the Far East war late, just in time to grab huge political and military victories in China. The Russians took the arms they captured from the defeated Japanese and gave them to the communist Chinese, who in turn used the weapons to rout the pro-American forces. Now in control of China, the Russians next turned to Korea. They set up a puppet regime in the northern half of the country and armed it well. The USA had begun disbanding it huge military after WWII and was enjoying the occupation of a compliant Japan, where everything was for sale, cheap, due to debased Japanese money. Japan itself was of course, without a military. S Korea had only minimal local armed forces. Smelling a quick and easy victory the Russians told their Korean 'ally' to march south and take over the rest of Korea. This they did and quickly overran about 90% of the country. The west decided, after some hand wringing, to put up a fight. While there was little interest in defending Korea itself, the consensus was that should Korea go 100% communist, this would put pressure on Japan to do likewise, just as Japan was entering a Republic/Democratic phase. With the brilliant leadership of the American General MacArthur, a counterstroke was laid on the N Korean army at Inchon. The N Korean army was crush and routed. The Americans sped north and approached the Chinese border. With bad intelligence, the Americans assumed the fight was about over, but the Chinese, urged by the Soviets, knew otherwise. The Chinese launched an infiltration type counterattack and made great strides in beating back the logistically heavy American army. MacArthur wanted to expand the war into China, which would probably have led to a nuclear confrontation with Russia. President Truman dismissed MacArthur and chose to fight a limited war, a war without hope of victory. After a year or so of back and forth fighting the country was divided by armistice along the line found on current maps. North Korea is today arguably the most repressive regime on planet earth. Their military is highly armed and talks aggressively. However, N Korea is surrounded by much more powerful states - Japan, China, and Russia all have vastly more military power. S Korea has a sizable military itself and is backed by excellent American naval and land forces. While N Korea may make a lot of noise about getting aggressive, they realize they can pose no real threat to their neighbors. Eventually the regime will fall and likely, Korea will be united again, as a free country, after more than a century of domination by foreigners.
