I'm guessing you mean races, not paint, though, so ... the answer to the question depends very much on where and when, but for much of US history at least, such relationships were .... let's say "frowned upon". The fact that they happened is evident from the existence of words like "octoroon" (a person with one black great-grandparent) and from laws regarding what percentage of black ancestry was required in order for someone to be considered "black" (usually, people with 1/8 or more "black" ancestry were considered legally black, and people with less than that were considered legally white, though this varied from state to state, and in practice was often ignored anyway). Interestingly, this didn't have much to do with slavery vs. freedom; someone legally white but born to a slave mother was still a slave.
