1453 was the year of the fall of Constantinople, and with it the Byzantine Empire. Some historians use this event as a marker for the end of the Middle ages.

1453 was also the year of the final battle of the Hundred Years' War, in which the French defeated the English and for practical purposes ended the claims of English monarchs to be also monarchs of France.

According to the Wikipedia entry for the year 1453, the printing press was invented that year. However this unfortunately happens to be wrong, as a number of other sources, including other articles in Wikipedia, show. The article on Gutenberg says his press was fully operating in 1450. I have put a link to a question on the invention of printing below, and its answer explains this in more detail.
