Russia had placed missiles in Cuba and JFK warned them to remove the missiles. They couldn't stay since Cuba is only 90 miles from the United States. When Russia refused to remove them Kennedy had the Navy blockade the island and not allow any Russian ships into it's waters. It was a standoff and we got within hours of war, but an agreement was finally made that Russia would remove the missiles.
