During the 1920's, Military prisoners were still being housed in the cell house. Within a decade, Alcatraz would begin a new era in penal reform. Anyway, military soldiers were being housed and trained on the island. Several of the Island's main guns were still in place, as well as the common use of a horse drawn carriage. The cannons that were taken off the Island were used as ornamental pieces for parks and forts (some of which are still there). There was also a major quarry operation on the Island. Rocks were being crushed and loaded onto steamers via an old, long gone wooden stretch known as the "Quarry Dock."
