in the 1930s, during the great depression, the dust bowlswept across the great planes, a region that includes Oklahoma. wind would pick up dust and spread it for hundreds of kilometers at a time. the dust could literally bury a home. during this time, farms were plagued with droughts, thousands of jack rabbits, and hundreds of thousands grasshoppers, killing all crops, and leaving many families broke. the dust also caused dust pneumonia, which didn't have a cure, and took the lives of many, though it was very common in children. the worst known dust storm was on April 14, 1935, a day now known as Black Sunday. The drought finally came to an end in 1939, bringing a halt to the dust storms.
