His landlords, Mr. and Mrs. Mountjoy, arranged for their daughter Mary to marry a man called Stephen Bellott. The deal was supposedly to include a payment by the Mountjoys of a dower for Mary, and Shakespeare was called upon to be the go-between. This happened in 1604--we know because Bellott sued Mountjoy over it and Shakespeare was called as a witness.
